Attracting Wild Birds to Your Garden
You can attract the wild birds in lots of different ways. The easiest is to provide the food they like and a safe place for them to feed. Bird feeders are ideal for providing food for them. Natural sources of food are scarce in the winter so they can be really helpful to the birds.
Feeding stations, containing favorite foods, can be set up to attract different species. Examples of speciality feeders include thistle feeders to hold the tiny thistle seeds that finches love. You can keep seeds dry and stop them spilling on the ground by using tube feeders. Set up a window bird feeder to watch the birds feed from inside your home.
Attract woodpeckers, goldfinches and hummingbirds with specially designed bird feeders. Put them close to your bird house in a safe place. Check the food in the bird feeder daily to make sure it is dry and mold free. Make sure you clean spilled food up regularly or it will attract pests such as ants and wasps.
Feeding during the winter is most beneficial for wild birds but shortages occur during other seasons as well. Help the wild birds by providing food for them all through the year. Temporary food shortages in the breeding season can have a severe effect on fledglings so provide them with with suitable food.
Put out pans of water or install a bird bath to provide a safe place for them to drink, preen and clean their feathers. Some birds prefer water at ground level, others prefer to bathe high above ground so provide this by placing container at different levels. Place containers shallowly filled with water in a quiet place away from bird feeders as birds do not like noise when they are bathing. Running water sounds will attract the birds. Place a water dripper on your bird bath to attract the birds.
The birds will have a better sense of security if you provide a natural environment. An area of the garden can be allowed to grow wild to make them an attractive place.
