Pool maintenance in winter is different than in than the summer. There are steps and procedures needed to get a pool ready when the warm weather starts and different steps and procedures to prepare a pool for cold weather and minimal or no use. Taking a few easy steps at the appropriate time can prevent expensive problems later.

Winter

When cold weather is coming, first drain the water from all water lines and replace with anti-freeze. Make sure the water in the pool is lower than the level indicated for freezing.

To stop algae growth and keep out debris and leaves cover the pool with a heavy duty cover, this should be one that is made specifically for that pool. It is best to do a shock treatment with 10 times the standard chlorine before closing down the pool. Drain the filter and disconnect the pump. Storing ladders, ropes or diving boards is good to do at this time, you can also take the oportunity to testing and clean them.

Safety

Make the pool safe so that it is not dangerous if small children stroll in during the times when no one is there.

Balance

Pool chemical balance is essential for a well maintained swimming pool. Balance covers the correct amount of chemicals, correct ph and alkaline balance, appropriate water movement and also cleaning.

Spring

Clean off and dry the pool cover and store it away in the spring when it’s time to open the pool again.

Remove the anti-freeze from the pipes.

Examine the filters to make sure they are clean.

Fill the pool to the normal level then shock it with chlorine (tablets or granules), cleanse it with a brush and vacuum it.

It is good to filter and vacuum for a few days to remove any algae that has formed when the pool was not used.

Test the chlorine level and ph making sure it is between 7.0 and 7.6 and add the chlorine at night to get the best effect.

Summary

For pleasurable swimming it is primary to have good pool maintenance. chlorine and swimming pool chemical levels are an essential part of this. Inflammation can be caused by both too much and too little chlorine. To keep the water clean at different times of the year it is essential to use care appropriate to the weather conditions.

Balance

Keeping the correct proportion of pool chemicals in your water is to a hygienic pool and indulging in an agreeable swim time after time. The water will keep looking and smelling clean and, most importantly, bacterial and algae growth will stay at a low level, this will ensure that everyone can enjoy your pool in safety.

The first stage is to ensure that the pool has the right mix of chemicals when you fill. A swimming pool starter kit is probably be the best thing to use here to ensure you get it right from the beginning, and there is a large selection available on the market just like the ones we manufacture and distribute from our swimming pool and spa chemicals store.

Keeping Things Going

After this you need to make sure you test using a testing kit. This makes sure you get the right balance of chemicals

{To let you get the best from your swimming pool or spa it is critical that the water is tested on a regular basis and you make sure it is kept in good condition. You can do this by the regular use of swimming pool chemicals. The testing of the  water will initially seem daunting, however test kits are easy to follow and can be relied on to give quick reliable results. }

The standard tests are
1. pH
2. Alkalinity
3. Sanitiser (Free Chlorine or Bromine)

Visual Investigation
1. Investigate the pool water for a clear appearance, and ensure it is clear.

Additional Tests
1. Calcium hardness
2. Combined chlorine
3. Copper levels

It is a sensible practise to always record your results and the chemical dosings you carry out. Keep a note book with your test kit and chemical treatments.
Remember to retest the water after the addition of chemicals to ensure you have reached the appropriate chemical levels.

* If the water is foggy then it is not safe to swim, people cannot see the bottom and might jump into dangerously shallow water!
* People in difficulty under the water will not be visible!
* Foggy water is an indication that there is a problem with the treatment.

Using Sanitisers

Sanitation is the most important for using pool chemicals. Left not properly treated, a swimming pool can become a breeding ground for bacteria and algae. The algae will affect the pool but the bacteria will make you ill!

The solution is a sanitiser like Bromine or Chlorine. Make sure that the levelsare maintained at all times and levels should be monitored and topped up weekly or as required. Remember, if you need to lower the levels, simply add increased water in your pool to reduce the concentration of the chlorine. There are different options for adding the Chlorine to the pool. Consider using slow dissolving tablets in conjunction with a chlorinator or, alternatively, a floater. You may need to be very careful that the floater stays in your swimming pool though!

Sanitation By Products

Fortnightly you also need to dose your pool with extra products to deal with the waste by-products created by the Chlorine, i.e. the dead bacteria and algae. Most will, of course, have been removed by your filtration system but some will still be present and degrade creating to unpleasant smells and skin and eye irritation. You can soon know when this is appropriate because your water will appear cloudy, you can use clarifiers and flocculents to solve this.

When testing your pool, watch your ph levels. This determines the acidity in your pool. The balance needs to be kept steady to enable the Chlorine to work effectively. After that, an effective pool filtering system will help you to keep your water clean and sanitary. And that is the key to an enjoyable swim every time!

By shopping online for Pool Chemicals or other Pool Accessories you can find unbeatable deals at wholesale prices.

With the winter weather starting to get us all down I have been looking into the possibility of installing a swimming pool in the garden in readiness for the great summer we are hoping to have!

There are so many on the market today and there is a lot to learn about the various types there are to buy.

Some of the more popular swimming pools are the above ground variety. They come in many colours and designs starting at really quite basic to luxurious. One thing to bear in mind is that a ladder would be needed to get in and out of these types of pools which might not be ideal for the young or the elderly.

All in all I think that the pools which are built into the ground are the favourite option for most home owners. It is possible to get more depth with these which surely must be an advantage.

Of course there is always a certain amount of maintenance with either type of these pools. It is extremely important to make sure that the swimming pool filters, pumps and any mechanical parts are regularly maintained.

Of course when your pool is first installed it looks so inviting. Just think of yourself sitting there admiring the look of the cool clean water saying “come on in” on a hot summers day! It is not always appreciated however how much it takes to maintain a swimming pool to a high standard.

Swimming pool chemicals are a must when it comes to keeping the pool in a healthy condition. There are Chlorine and Bromine feeders and it seems that with the aid of the chemicals that are on offer today there is really no excuse for not keeping your pool in pristine condition.

There is nothing worse than the look of a pool which has been neglected. It will often become a breeding ground to mosquitoes and other pests which in fact carry diseases. It would be a sensible precaution to get a cover for your new pool and keep it clean from the start.

So weighing up all the pros and I think this will be a brilliant idea and something to look forward to in the summer months ahead.
